Storyboard

In order to carry on producing our music video we needed to have a storyboard. Our artist and song changed a few times, therefore we didn't have a storyboard for every artist and song. However for the final song we decided on, we did manage to make a storyboard. Even though we made a storyboard, due to the circumstances and the difficulties of our situation we were not able to maintain following our storyboard that i had produced (although it was unfinished). Above is my scanned in planning for my storyboard (images 1-5) and also my unfinished storyboard (images 6 & 7).

Costume, Props List, Sketches, Mood Board

In order to carry out our filming we needed to do some preparations beforehand such as costumes. props list, sketches, mood board etc. Above is images of a local map that we used to locate areas that we could film in such as parks and blocks etc. As for costumes, we decided that it would all be casual and therefore anyone can wear anything they wanted to for filming. A few props that we needed was handcuffs that our teacher ordered for us online and a bag that had built in speakers so that we could play the song out loud while filming and therefore it made our job easier.

We tried our best to stick to our storyboard, however this was not possible due to our circumstances. Therefore we resulted in using the map of our local area in order to find new locations as soon as possible and we also improvised on our whole video.

Other props that we used were the equipment used for filming in the studio where we used the coloured lights and the steam machine (FUN..!! =D)

Analysis Of My Primary Research & Results

My Primary Research... QUESTIONAIRES..!!

As part of this project we were required to carry out some research. This was both fun ( =D) and also quite boring (=[ ). We needed to produce three different questionnaires for parents, teenagers and the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transexuals) society. We then handed them out to everyone that we could including our class mates.

Above are scanned in questionnaires that are completed.

An Introduction To What I Am Doing & Convention Of Music Videos

This year we have been told that as part of our coursework, which is worth 50% of our grade, we would need to produce a music video, with our own artist. As part of this project we needed to keep an online diary on blogger. This meant we would need to update our blog regularly with what we have done in relation to this project. This included everything we done in class and out. At the start of the year we started off by watching music videos and looking at artists such as lady gaga. This could also be known as part of our research. As part of our research we also carried out questionnaires and analysed the results which will be mentioned later on. Carrying on from this...

Conventions Of Music Videos...

In class we learnt and looked at the different types of music conventions. This included the following:

1) Rapid shot changes- this is the use of many different random shot changes within one minute.

2) Poetic images- this is the use images that are linked to emotions and music, for example in Runaway Love by Mary J Blige ft Ludacris.

3) Imagery- this is the use of images to tell a story.

4) Fairytale story- this is when we have a classic boy meets Hollywood girl story. An example of this would be Love Story by Taylor Swift.

5) Jump cuts- this is when there is a cut between 2 scenes, for example from a scene where a girl is walking by the river to another scene where the boy is playing football.

6) Editing is linked to the music video- this is when the rhythm of the editing is linked to the editing of the music and its beats. This can be seen in The Dukes- Vampire.

7) Creating the spectacular- this is the use of costumes, props. lighting, jewellery, accessories, setting, dancing and choreography etc. This is seen in Britney Spears- Circus.

8) Music videos can create a social message- for example Michael Jackson- Earth Song. This type of convention is there for a purpose and to send out a message or moral to the audience.

Analysis Of Runaway Love

Runaway love is a song written by an artist called Ludacris featuring Mary J Blige. The song is about young girls, who are fragile and are having problems at home with family and therefore they they result in running away from home. The girls are all aged from 9-11, Lisa (9), Nicole (10) and Erica (11). All three girls are shown as vulnerable throughout the video.

The main target audience for this video is mainly teenagers themselves and even more parents, carers and guardians. The reason for this is because parents and guardians need to be more aware of the day to day lives that their children are going through and the possibilities of the risks that young children may be facing. This may in some ways lead to more cautious behaviour by adults in order to prevent any harm or danger befalling on the children. As well as this Parents and carers need to be aware so that they can give more and show love and affection and also take into consideration and into account what the child tells them.

An example where this should occur, but is completely ignored by the parent is in 9 year old Lisa's case. In this situation her mum was a druggie and therefore not a stable mother. the mother's boyfriend abuses the young girl, however the mother refuses to listen and take into mind what her daughter is telling her.

The characters in the video are all mainly sad and unhappy, as the music video and lyrics is covering a sensitive topic, where all three young girls are having to go through child abuse. This is nothing compared to the actual figures of child abuse that goes on in actual real life. The actual statistics, making it a fact are incredibly higher than just the three examples that are shown in this video.

Nicole, the second young girl, aged only just 10 in the video also suffers from child abuse. The only comfort she received was from telling her best friend about her situation and the troubles that she faces at home until, as said in the lyrics and the video, "one day she got shot." Then one day she decides that she is going to run away from home and escape her life.

The final scenario in the video is of Erica. an 11 year girl that is having sex with a 16 year old boy that gets her pregnant. The boy throughout their relationship is shown as having sex with other girls, even when he finds out that she is pregnant. this shows how little he cares and "loves" her. However, when she realises the truth, even though late, but better late than never, she also decides to run away from home. There is a long shot of Nicole running away and looking behind as she is leaving her family and home.

Expressions on Ludacris's and Mary J Blige's face looks deeply thoughtful and focused throughout the video while narrating the stories of these three young girls. There are mainly closeups of the expression to show the deep intimate feelings and emotions of the characters. Also the characters in the video live in a materialistic deprived environment and in the "ghetto". These areas are known to have higher rates of sensitive topics such as child abuse. The people living in these areas are stereotypically seen as lower class and of black African ethnicity mainly, even though in the video not everyone is of this race and ethnic origin.

In the video the environment and the setting looks rough. For example, under the bridge, where there are lots of graffiti and the walls that have posters of missing girls. Also, the scene where the candles are lit, it makes the scenario look spiritual and deep.

Along with this music video, as a class we also looked at other music videos such as Nas " I Can" and Pink "Family Portrait", and we analysed them through a discussion in class.

Camera & Equipment Testing

For our camera and equipment testing, we went into the media studio and tested out all the equipment. This included the cameras, including the handheld and also the still camera in order to take pictures. As well as this we did a lighting test. We tested out all the different lights and the way in which they can be used in our music video. We tested the lighting on different backgrounds to see how well or not well it would turn out in the different lighting effects. Also we played about with all the equipment altogether, including the music and sound.
